Sedge Meadow

This 20 acre park is part of the Land Conservancy of McHenry County. A sedge meadow can be defined as Nature's Sponge. This wetlands holds volumes of fresh water. The sedge plants predominate the surface and create surface clumps. Typical species include a diversity of sedges (Carex spp.), blue -joint grass (Calamagrostis canadensis), spike rushes (Eleocharis spp.), great angelica (Angelica atropurpurea), sneezeweed (Helenium autumnale), and boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum). Rare wetland birds, snakes and invertebrates (e.g., butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies) can be found in remnant sedge meadows. nearby Jacobsen park has 10 acres of additional Sedge Meadow.

A small Oak Savannah is on the North Side of the site. Oak Savannahs are small oak woodlands that survived the prairie fires. Another Savannah can be see to the North in Meadows of West Bay and to the West on West Wonder Lake Road before Greenwood School. Many savannahs are located around the Hebron area.

Two interpretive signs explains these unique features. The Bruchsaler Memorial Trail loops around the edge of the savannah and through the woods with the trail ending at the basketball court on Thompson Road.
