Pollinator Habitat Restoration and Enhancement Dialogue

This department grew out of our involvement in the “The Mayor’s Monarch Pledge”. Learn more about the pledge here. Our goals are simple; create areas throughout the Village to restore and enhance pollinator habitat. These can be large areas or small road right of ways. Our goal is to have residents identify sites in their neighborhoods and act as stewards to develop these into native pollinator safe zones. The Village will help support these sites with plant identification, labor from the group of volunteers if needed, and the purchase of seed and/or plants for Village owned property. As we progress we will be building a phenologic data base of Wonder Lake.

Phenology is the study of periodic events in biological life cycles and how these are influenced by seasonal and interannual variations in climate, https://www.usanpn.org/ There are three main factors that affect phenology 1) sunlight 2)temperature and 3) precipitation. Some examples of phenology include when migrating birds return, when plants first flower, and when lakes freeze and reopen.
