Hazardous Household Waste Collection Event

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA), Lake in the Hills Sanitary District and the McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) have partnered to hold a free, one-day household hazardous waste collection event in McHenry County. The event is open to all Illinois residents.
The one-day event will take place on Saturday, June 26, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Huntley School District’s Reed Road Campus, 10910 Reed Road, Lake in the Hills. All participants must access the event by entering the campus from Reed Road.
Attendees will need to remain in their vehicles at all times while they are at the collection site. Event staff will remove the household hazardous waste from vehicles.
A large turnout is expected. Waste collection will begin promptly at 8 a.m. and everyone who is in line by 3 p.m. will be able to drop off eligible waste. Vehicles that try to join the line after the event closes at 3 p.m. will be denied access.
Carpooling or designating one person to bring the household hazardous waste from several households is welcome.

Items accepted:
Chemical cleaners, oil-based paints, thinners, antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline, kerosene, weed killers, insecticides and pesticides, old or outdated medication that are not a controlled substance (liquid or pills) and similar hazardous household products. Fluorescent and other high-intensity discharge lamps may also be brought to the collection.
Items not accepted:
Latex paint, explosives, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, needles/sharps, DEA controlled medications, agricultural chemicals and business waste.
Consider these tips when transporting waste to the collection site:
Pack household hazardous waste items in a disposable box to avoid spilling during transport.
Keep like chemicals together and separate unlike chemicals.
Secure lids and make sure containers are not leaking.
Place box or boxes of household hazardous waste in your vehicle's empty trunk away from passengers.
